Witchcraft - Not All Black and White

Written By Kim K Brown

When you hear the word "witch" what image pops into your head? Maybe you imagine the Wicked Witch of the West, with green skin and a wart on the end of the nose? Perhaps you think of the evil stepmother in fairy tales? You might also think of the fairy godmother or the Good Witch of the North who resembles a fairy princess. If you have been indoctrinated with all these images of so-called "witches" from the media and your knowledge on the subject outside of movies and children's books is limited, then your first image would probably not be that of real, average, normal people but instead of fictitious characters like the ones mentioned above. However, things are not black and white in real life, and there are no such things as good or bad witches as portrayed in some books and movies. Rather, there are just people for whom witchcraft is a part of their lives.

Witchcraft is basically the practice or use of magical or supernatural powers. It is typically practiced in the realm of a religion, such as different Wiccan or Pagan traditions, but not necessarily so. This means that it can be performed separate from a person's spirituality or belief in the Divine. Therefore, not all witches are Wiccans. Some are Pagans and some are something else entirely. Likewise not all Pagans use magic, and Wiccans are a type of Pagan witches. In terms of religion, magic is commonly used when performing certain religious rituals.

There are good and bad kinds of witchcraft, oftentimes referred to respectively as white and black. Black magic spells are used to harm an individual or individuals, whereas white magic spells are used to protect, help, and heal an individual or individuals. Good spells would usually be performed either for yourself or for people you care about. There are other types of spells that may also be performed, such as love spells, money making spells, and power enhancing magic spells.

While black magic spells can be performed, most religions that involve the practice of magic, such as Wicca and other Pagan religions, prohibit the use of magic to harm somebody. A lot of the magic that is performed in these religions is actually used to help ward off black magic and other harmful spells and rituals that have been or could be performed on somebody. Therefore, it would behoove you to disregard what you have learned about witchcraft and its followers from the media and conduct research through reputable sources to learn how it truly works.

  1. Thank you very much for this good information about witchcraft and magic spells. But one thing you forgot is witchcraft here in Africa is a religion and is practiced by many people as a belief. One person just to say is me I believe in spells and witchcraft.
Secondly people must not take these words as the images you specified above. Some of the spells casted are meant to clear and purify many problems in life. Just to mention but a few are the black magic spells and loves spells. Plus many more.

any way thank you very much for sharing this good information it is so amazing that many people like to share this info about our religions.
